“The key is to make them think you will do anything to break them,” Alexei said. “You have to make them think they won’t see another sunrise, that their families will be the first to fall, and that you will be the one to push them or any member of their family under a bus. Only then can you draw from them what you need.”

His hands were heavy on her shoulders, where he held her, fingers tight, his eyes peering into hers.

“Understand?” he said.

Making certain there was no emotion in her voice, she replied, “Here endeth the lesson.”
