Submission Guidelines

Unexpected Paths accepts up to three manuscripts per year of fiction only, novel-length works (50,000 – 90,000 words) in any genre EXCEPT romance, erotica, and religion-based work. Work should be in a “final draft” status, i.e., no rough or unedited drafts but a draft considered ready for publication.

The audience of your work should be age 16+ or high school junior or higher. There are no restrictions on language, and violence and sexual situations should be germane to the story, i.e., move the plot along rather than being gratuitous. Male and female roles should be egalitarian, as should be the treatment of characters who are persons of color or LGBTQ, i.e., manuscripts advocating discrimination against protected groups will be rejected.

Before submission, the manuscript should be professionally edited by someone other than the author. An obviously unedited draft will be rejected without consideration. If an author indicates the manuscript was self-edited, the first 10 pages will be reviewed to confirm that sufficient editing has occurred.

Note: Once the limit of submissions has been reached, this page will be changed to reflect the date of closure. Any manuscript received after that date will be returned.
